How Can Losing Weight Promote Better Money Management?

There are some who believe the best way to get your finances in order is to simply create a budget. That works for many people, but not all. We’ve recently stumbled across another theory that we like, and we wanted to share with you.

Michael Hyatt, one of the authors of Living Forward: A Proven Plan to Stop Drifting and Get the Life You Want, says that the different parts of our lives are not actually separate. Instead, he argues that making positive changes in one part of your life will help make positive changes in other areas.

How Does Losing Weight Help with Money Management?

There are a few theories as to why losing weight can help with money management. We’ve summarized a few popular ideas as to why it works.

  • The Domino Effect – Many professionals believe that those who are struggling to change one aspect of their life should try changing something else first. By first making a positive change in one area, your health for example, you may be able to use it as a catalyst to promote change in another.
  • Clear Your Mind – Another idea is that by clearing your mind of other goals, you can free up head space for other things. Some people may find that achieving a fitness goal relieves other stresses which may have negatively impacted their financial goals.
  • Getting Pumped Up – Some people say that having success in one area boosts morale. It energizes people, and motivates them to keep on winning. Losing a few pounds is enough to get most people feeling good, and looking for more wins.
  • One-Track Mind – Many experts say that simplifying your routines makes life easy to manage. If you start eating the same things at the same time, you’ll be able to live life without making as many decisions. Apparently, decisions can get you in trouble.
  • Spending Less – A more practical reasoning suggests that people who are losing weight are generally spending less. For example, if you’re trying to lose weight, you’re probably eating out less, buying smaller portions, cutting back on vices, etc.

Advocates of this approach have also said that losing weight is not the only effective change you can make. Typically, any significant and positive change you make in your life should help. Decluttering your home, or quitting smoking could also have a similarly happy result.
